Letter: Trump supporters are the problem

Three years ago, Donald Trump tried everything he could think of to deny the will of the voters and stay in power; finally, he sent a mob to murder our leaders and republic. This traitor tried to steal our country from us.

But the problem is less Trump than his supporters. In a country that prides itself on choosing our leaders he said, in 2016, “I will accept the results of the election if I win,” telling us that he alone will decide who our leader will be; 74 million Americans heard this un-American remark and still voted for him.

On Jan. 6, 2021, 147 congressional Republicans voted to throw out the votes of millions in two states, based on a transparent lie. Republican leaders have publicly advocated for disregarding court decisions and referendums with which they disagree; after Trump called for the execution of the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, threatened to “terminate” the Constitution and labeled those who disagree with his politics “vermin” who should be “rooted out,” his supporters loved him all the more.

How thin is their professed love for America, that they would so easily jettison the freedoms that define our country?
