Port of Camas-Washougal completes Lawton Creek work

Erosion-control work needed to protect Columbia River levee system; mitigation project gives levee system extra protection

CAMAS — The Port of Camas-Washougal has completed a mitigation project at Lawton Creek that will provide its Columbia River levee system with additional protection.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers created the 5.5-mile levee along the Columbia River, west of the Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge, in 1966 to reduce flood risk.

“Lawton Creek has been digging into the levee down at the very east end, so we had to shore it up with boulders and (other materials) to protect the levee,” Port of Camas-Washougal CEO David Ripp said. “Since it’s close to the stream, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife required us to do some mitigation. We restabilized the bank and put riprap in there to protect it from the soil getting washed away in the creek when the creek rises up because of flooding or during spring runoff.”

The port took on the $46,000 project in an effort to prevent creek erosion that could impact the levee, according to Ripp.

“It’s starting to erode, and it could get worse,” he said. “Where we did the mitigation is not the same place where the erosion is. The erosion is maybe several hundred feet up the creek. (But the levee) looks good. It’s our responsibility, so we just keep maintaining and managing it and keeping an eye out where we did that work as well.”

The port received permits from the Corps of Engineers and Washington State Department of Transportation; the agency hired Oregon-based AKS Engineering and Forestry to provide consultation services.

Maintenance and repair work began in August 2022.

The port’s maintenance employees completed the project in September 2023, placing woody debris in the creek to protect the habitat from birds and other forms of wildlife and inserting a 10-foot-long log and root wads into a section of the creek bank to provide additional stabilization.

“We pushed (the tree) over at the airport because we had some trees we needed to remove out there anyway,” Ripp said. “We cut it to length after we knocked it down because we wanted to save the roots.

“You bury (the log) deep inside the bank and the root wad sticks in the creek so the bank embankment has security. There’s probably 15 feet of dirt on it, so it’s not going to (move around). It’s like when you don’t want a basketball pole to fall over, so you bury it deep into the ground so the ground supports it. That’s exactly what this log does. That log lays horizontal, and (we) buried it, and the stump sticks out in the creek.”
