Letter: Ban cheerleading?

By Michael Beanland, Vancouver
Published: December 27, 2022, 6:00am

To those who would like to ban drag queen story hour, or to ban women dressed as men, or to ban men dressed as women, with the justification that it is blatantly sexual and not for children’s eyes, I want to call your attention to a blatantly sexual display that children are exposed to, a display that includes bumping and grinding, a display that includes costumes that barely cover overtly sexual portions of the body, and that is cheerleading.

Is there nothing more inappropriate than preteens, wearing skimpy sexually suggestive outfits, bumping and grinding in front of their peers? Or the overtly sexual displays at major sporting events? If the goal of such bans is to protect children from displays that are inappropriate; let’s make sure we include all such displays inappropriate for children’s eyes, starting with cheerleading at sports venues.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
