Letter: Demand accountability for actions

Trump is gone and we can breathe again. Biden and Harris have an enormous task ahead of them to reunite this country and to combat this deadly virus.

At the same time, however, we cannot afford to allow the outgoing president to get a pass on the fact that he played a key role in the insurrection that occurred on Jan. 6. There is ample evidence to prove that Trump willingly and knowingly incited a riot and encouraged a crowd of anti-government, anti-democratic insurrectionists (clearly avid Trump supporters as evidenced by the many banners and signs) to attack the seat of government with a clear intention of not only disrupting the elected representatives of the American people in the conduct of their official duties, but also to destroy property and quite possibly kidnap and kill members of Congress. To allow Trump to go unpunished for his role in the horror of Jan. 6 would insult the memory of the brave officer who died in defense of his country.

The Bible is clear on its instruction to forgive those who do us harm. The Bible, however, does not argue against holding such people accountable for their actions.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
