Authorities are investigating after an 11-year-old girl reported that a man tried to lure her into his vehicle Wednesday in Washougal by brandishing a firearm.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 7:45 a.m. of the incident in the 2000 block of Canyon Creek Road.

The girl was waiting for a school bus near her residence when the man attempted to lure her. He fled after seeing traffic approaching, according to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.

She described the suspect car as a newer back sedan or smaller SUV; deputies said it may be hatchback-style. It was last seen traveling toward Washougal River Road. The suspect was described as a white man with a medium build, light brown hair and facial hair. He was wearing camouflage clothing and a dark-colored baseball cap, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Deputies responded to the area to search for the suspect. Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School and Canyon Creek Middle School were placed on lockdown, and a reverse 911 notification went out, the news release said. The suspect and vehicle were not located.

Neighboring law enforcement agencies were notified.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the incident should call the sheriff’s office at 509-427-9490.
