Letter: Thanks for nothing, VA

I would like The Columbian and all veterans like me to express appreciation to the Department of Veterans Affairs for withholding our monthly billing since April. I, like you, wondered what happened to my monthly bill — and now I get slammed with a $403 lump-sum debt they say I owe since November. I know for many of you it is much higher. But many of us who live solely on Social Security or veterans pensions, that gigantic debt can never be paid. They said they withheld it because of COVID-19; well, then, why don’t they say that it is not a debt but a gift, a freebie for all of us because of this awful pandemic, and let it go at that?

What say we all write a letter to our wonderful VA for their compassion and wisdom?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
