Letter: Shutdown doesn’t make sense

Donald Trump is holding the country hostage over funding for the campaign promise of a wall that Mexico was supposed to pay for. Never mind that border security experts say that the needed expenditures should be on technology for the large ports and points of entry where illicit drugs are being sneaked in. Never mind that the illegal hordes Donald Trump keeps warning about are just asylum-seekers who are voluntarily turning themselves in to begin the asylum process.

The Department of Agriculture is affected, meaning millions of people expecting SNAP (food stamp) benefits may not receive them. The Treasury Department is also affected. Ironically we have the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the TSA and the Coast Guard, as one of the departments not being funded. Shouldn’t that department’s Secret Service protection for Donald Trump be discontinued as part of the shutdown?
