Fort Vancouver Boys: Trappers not taking an easy road through season

Fort Vancouver’s non-league schedule is a coach’s nightmare. Sixth-year coach James Ensley prefers it that way.

The Trappers opened with 4A Battle Ground and perennial 2A contender Mark Morris. They continue with Union, a 4A title contender, Skyview and 3A Capital.

“Our non-league is not fun,” Ensley said. “But if we ever want to get to that level, we have to play those schools to see how they do it.”

Teams like Mark Morris show what a disciplined defense can do to a free-wheeling offense like Fort Vancouver’s. Union and Skyview are consistent contenders and have cultures that get the best out of their players. Battle Ground boasts one of the top players in the state.

“We use that film all year,” Ensley said. “Not because we want to play like that, but we want to know what they do so well.”

The Trappers try to take those lessons and apply it to their style of play, which Ensley described as “getting after it having a lot of fun.”

Khalil Singleton, a 6-foot sophomore guard, will spearhead the attack. “He’s special,” Ensley said.

Tre Cannon, a 5-9 junior, returns from a broken foot that kept him out of last season.

“They’ve come a long way,” Ensley said of his young team. “There’s just a different energy level.”

The Trappers went 3-17 last year. All three of their wins came during league play.
