Vancouver – The Vancouver Police Department has extended its application deadline to volunteer with its Neighbors on Watch program, but only through today.

Neighbors On Watch program volunteers conduct citizen patrols in Vancouver, acting as extra eyes and ears for patrol officers. NOW volunteers also have helped with evidence searches, canvassing for missing people, documenting speeding and stop sign violations, and finding stolen vehicles.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, pass a thorough background check, complete 40 hours of training over eight weeks, and commit to 4 hours of volunteer service per month.

Training includes radio communications, observation skills, CPR, searching for evidence and citizen patrol procedures.

To apply or find out more, go to the department’s website at vanpolice.org or tinyurl.com/m8j528k. Interested volunteers also can contact Volunteer Service Coordinator Kelly Cheney at kelly.cheney@cityofvancouver.us or 360-487-7467.
