GRANGER — The former police chief of a southern Washington town is fighting to keep his police credentials after he was convicted of lying under oath earlier this year.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports former Granger Police Chief Robert Perales requested a hearing to challenge the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s decision in October to revoke his police credentials.

Perales was convicted for statements he made during a hearing on a no-contact order sought by his former girlfriend. He was initially charged with felony perjury and stalking, but those charges were dropped after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Bill Pickett, the attorney representing Perales, says the commission unfairly considered the initial felony charges when it made its decision.

A date for the hearing has not yet been scheduled.
