Recently my wife and I went shopping. I read labels while she shopped. We visited six different stores. I looked at Christmas decorations, toys, tools, clothing and small appliances.
I randomly read labels on 30 to 60 items in each of eight categories. It strained my bifocals to find, and then read, the country of origin. Most products had American brand names. Why are they shy about telling us where they make them? I was astonished and angry that less than 3 percent of these items were made in the U.S. That means 97 percent were foreign, with China alone making up 69.4 percent. Buy American? Not even possible any more.
Census data shows the lower three-fifths of Americans are making less than they were 15 years ago, while the Forbes 400 richest billionaires have doubled their collective net worth in only eight years. China didn’t steal our jobs. Powerful Americans chose to send their fellow Americans’ jobs to China.
