1. Oscar worthy

Film fans have a chance to be part of the film academy, by watching this year’s Oscar-nominated short films. The Liberty and Kiggins theaters will be screening the documentary, live action and animated short films created from around the globe. Films include “Feast,” Walt Disney Animation Studios’ short from the perspective of a dog, and “Boogaloo and Graham,” a film about life changes as two brothers are given baby chicks to raise. 2. Go Hawks

Local Seattle Seahawks fans will host a 12th Man Fan Rally in downtown Vancouver to celebrate the team’s return to the Super Bowl. There will be music, games, food and more starting at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 in Esther Short Park, 301 W. Sixth St., Vancouver. 3. Writing from the heart

The Professional Writers Series kicks off with Portland author Tom Spanbauer from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 3. He is the founder of Dangerous Writing, a workshop that includes Cheryl Strayed, Chuck Palahniuk and Chelsea Cain among its alumni. His most recent book, “I Loved You More,” explores the dynamics of a love triangle, set over 25 years. The lecture will take place in the Library, Room 203 at Washington State University Vancouver, 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave., Vancouver. 4. Winter theater

Thursday will mark the start of three high school theater productions.

• The Battle Ground Drama Club presents “Crimes of the Heart,” as the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe and Lenny, reunite in their old family home after Babe shoots her abusive husband. Each sister must reconcile her own “crimes of the heart” and past family relationships. The show begins 7 p.m. Feb. 5-7 and Feb. 12-13 at the Lair, Battle Ground High School, 300 W. • The Skyview High School Drama Club will perform the Greek tragedy written by Sophocles, “Oedipus Rex (Oedipus the King).” Oedipus, in the process of becoming the king of Thebes, unwittingly fulfills the prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. • Prairie High School will present two plays by Irish playwright John Millington. In “The Playboy of the Western World,” a young man on the run tells the locals at an Irish pub that he killed his father. Thanks to his storytelling, the townsfolk praise his boldness, while the bartender’s daughter falls in love — until his clearly not-dead father appears. “Riders to the Sea” is a one-act tragedy that captures the poetic dialogue of rural Ireland.
