Letter: Oppose oil trains

The Columbian
Published: January 27, 2014, 4:00pm

I read your Jan. 23 editorial, “Heed Red Flags Of Oil By Rail.” The points made were all very good and pointed out the report that showed how crude oil spills have increased dramatically in North America. The proposers state that 99.9 percent of the shipments arrived last year without any problems. The chance that a train loaded with oil might derail as it brings 380,000 barrels of crude down the Gorge to this facility and the possible spills that might occur on an outdated rail bridge that passes right over I-5 are not risks that I want our state to take. This does not even mention what this number of daily trains will do to undervalue and harm the planned waterfront development.

I urge all who can to speak up in opposition to this plan.
