As newcomers to Vancouver, we have been delighted to discover the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Moving here from Washington, D.C., in the shadow of The Kennedy Center, we were hopefully optimistic we would find decent classical music here. Little did we imagine we would find music of the caliber of the VSO. Last weekend’s performance highlighting Ryu Goto (a world-class violinist educated at Harvard), is a perfect example of the talent that greets the audience this season.
Our local symphony and their guest artists would match anything we could hear anywhere in the Northwest — at a fraction of the price. This year’s venue of artists has been surprisingly varied: a soprano, a harmonica player, a flutist — next month, a tubist, then young artists, and finally two pianists. The quality of performance and the variety this season is outstanding. In addition, the staff and management of the VSO greet the audience with warmth and gusto. What a fabulous welcome to newcomers accustomed to beautiful classical music who want to continue their enjoyment of classical music at a good value. The VSO is a gem, nestled in our new town — Vancouver! Clark County is indeed fortunate to have Salvador Brotons and his baton at the helm of this lovely orchestra.
