Letter: Logical action is to dismiss lease

The Columbian
Published: January 14, 2014, 4:00pm

I’m confused. We elect the port commissioners. We are required to pay property taxes to support the Port of Vancouver. Given the fact that the port is subsidized by the public and the commissioners are elected by the public, shouldn’t the commissioners be acting in the best interests of the public? I should think so.

Yet they approved the Tesoro-Savage oil terminal facility lease, despite overwhelming opposition by the public? I’m trying to understand the logic. Perhaps they were willing to approve something ugly, stinky, loud and scary in exchange for some jobs? Now I read that the impact, due to the negative effect on the proposed waterfront development, will likely be a net loss in total jobs? How can any of this possibly be for the public good?
