SEATTLE — A construction worker who fell about 50 feet from scaffolding on a building near the Space Needle has died.

Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore says the man was taken to Harborview Medical Center, although he was unconscious and had no pulse when medics reached him. The Seattle Times reports that the man died.

KING-TV reports that other construction workers say the man, in his 30s, was an ironworker and Monday was his first day on the job site. One worker suggested the man might have unclipped his safety gear to move from one place to another on the scaffolding.

The man was not immediately identified.

A state Department of Labor & Industries spokeswoman says the agency is investigating.
