The response of Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association to the shooting of 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut is that more guns are needed to stop the killers. The leadership of the NRA has been making this argument for over 20 years.
However, if this argument were true, then gun violence should have decreased as more lenient gun laws have been passed.
The amount of gun violence we have witnessed during the past year is clear evidence that the logic of the NRA leaders is badly flawed. My hope is that the average member of the NRA is more logical than their leaders. If so, they should vote to replace the current leaders of the NRA, and they should lobby Congress to pass reasonable gun laws.
LaPierre had an opportunity two weeks ago to propose reasonable gun laws, but he blamed the deaths of these 20 children on everything but guns. It is time for him to go so we can find reasonable people to solve this problem.
