‘E-Waste’ recycling event is next weekend

The Clark County Skills Center Electro-Digital Technologies Program is hosting a post-holiday “E-Waste” recycling event from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Skills Center, 12200 N.E. 28th St. in Vancouver.

Donations of computers, printers and peripherals will be recycled free of charge.

No appliances or televisions will be accepted.

ESD offering parent webinars

Education Service District 112 is launching a series of webinars called “Parent U,” which are designed to help parents connect with professionals who can provide guidance and resources they need to help their children.

Parents may watch a presentation online, ask questions and participate in live surveys.

Each session is $10, and topics include cyber bullying, kids and mobile devices, sexting, digital footprints and child sex trafficking.

Presentations take place on Tuesday evenings and typically last one hour. For more information or to register, visit www.parentu.net.

Turf Committee extends brick purchase fundraiser

Due to community requests, the Washougal School District Turf Committee has decided to extend the deadline for purchasing bricks for the Honor Walk that will be installed at Washougal High School’s Fishback Stadium this summer.

“Recently, we have had many requests to allow purchasing after the new year,” an announcement from the Turf Committee stated. “Since the committee wants everyone to have the opportunity to be included in the Honor Walk, they have decided to extend the deadline to March 31.”

Bookmark design contest opens

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to enter the Fort Vancouver Regional Library’s 2013 Summer Reading bookmark contest.

Copies of the entry form are available at the Washougal Community Library, 1661 “C” St., and at the library’s homepage at www.fvrl.org.

Schools offer winter closure information in several formats

Winter weather can sometimes mean school closures or late starts for local students. In the Camas and Washougal school districts, emergency information can be accessed in a number of ways.

In Washougal, in the event of a school closure due to inclement weather or an emergency, the information will be updated on the FlashAlert.net site. The district also uses an auto-notification system to let parents and staff know about school delays and closures by calling the phone number listed in the student information system in the event of a weather incident. If buses are on snow routes, that information can be found in the “emergency info” tab at the top right corner of the district’s homepage.

In Camas, inclement weather information is listed on the district’s website, www.camas.wednet.edu, under the “emergency info” icon. Emergency and school closure information is also posted to the local media via FlashAlert. In the event that school is closed or delayed due to inclement weather, the district’s emergency notification system will call parents at their home number around 6 a.m. to announce late start, closure or snow route information.

Snow route locations are listed in the emergency information section of the website.

Local student featured in Port art display

The Port of Camas-Washougal opened a new art display in the lobby of its office, 24 S. “A” St., showing the winners of the annual Columbia Gorge Refuge Stewards Youth Photo Contest.

The winners of the annual photo contest are photography students from Cleveland High School in Portland, Ore., Union High School and Camas High School.

This year’s first place winner was a photo taken by Matt Murray from CHS. Second place was awarded to Andrea Nelson, now a student at Brigham Young University.

The 12 photographs on display illustrate the diversity of wildlife and landscapes visible at the Refuge.

The contest requires photos to be taken exclusively within the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge, adjacent to port industrial park property in Washougal.

The port is currently accepting original art, including landscape paintings, wildlife photography, northwest fishing, aviation and other recreational activities for its ongoing art display program.
