PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The condition of a 5-year-old boy who escaped from a car swept away in a flooded Albany creek is improving at a Portland hospital.

Doernbecher Children’s Hospital told The Oregonian (http://is.gd/xTQGec) that Maliki Wilgus has been upgraded from critical to serious.

He and his father, Christopher, survived after their car was swept from a grocery store parking lot into rain-swollen Periwinkle Creek. Catherine McLaughlin and her year-old son died.
