BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine says he doesn’t know how the shortstop situation will work out.

The Red Sox traded Marco Scutaro to Colorado this month, leaving them with former utilitymen Mike Aviles and Nick Punto as incumbents. Also in the mix is 22-year-old Jose Iglesias, who spent most of last season at Triple-A.

Valentine said Monday night that he’s glad there will be competition for jobs at spring training.

Scutaro hit a career-high .299 last year. He was traded to the Rockies for right-hander Clayton Mortensen.
