Bruce, Hampton beat South Carolina State 78-66

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — David Bruce scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half to lead Hampton’s rally in a 78-66 win over South Carolina State on Tuesday night.

The Pirates (7-13, 3-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) trailed 40-35 at halftime and opened up the second half on a 6-3 run to pull within two. After the Bulldogs (4-16, 0-7) took a 47-44 lead with 12:48 to go, Hampton used an 11-0 run to go up 55-47 on Christopher Tolson’s 3 with 9:21 remaining.

Hampton outrebounded S.C. State 32-19 in the second half, outscoring it 19-0 on second-chance points in the period.

Bruce and Danny Agbelese, who had 13 points, grabbed 12 rebounds each for Hampton, which topped S.C. State 55-41 in that category.

The Pirates outscored the Bulldogs 30-9 on second-chances and 44-24 on points in the paint.

Brandon Riley scored 24 points for the Bulldogs, who lost their 14th straight.
