ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Reggie Middleton was fouled on his attempt at a game-winning 3-pointer with 1 second left, and he sank all three foul shots to propel Winthrop over Gardner-Webb 56-54 on Thursday night.

The teams traded leads five times in the final 5 minutes, as Tashan Newsome’s layup put the Runnin’ Bulldogs up 54-53 with 1:29 to play. Both teams went scoreless until the game’s final second, combining for three timeouts, a turnover and a missed 3.

Coming out of Gardner-Webb’s final timeout, Middleton had a look for a possible game-winning trey. He was fouled, though, and stepped to the line to go 3-for-3.

George Valentine led the Eagles (8-12, 5-4 Big South Conference) with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Matt Morgan also scored 12 points. Middleton finished with 11. The Eagles have alternated wins and losses in their last six games.

Newsome led Gardner-Webb (9-12, 4-5) with 11 points.
