SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The Cleveland Indians pitcher known as Fausto Carmona has been released on bail as Dominican authorities investigate his alleged use of a false identity to play baseball in the U.S.
The Indians opening-day starter last season apologized to fans, his team and the U.S. government as he left the jail. Judge Keyla Perez released him Friday on bail of around $13,000. Carmona was ordered to check in with prosecutors as their investigation continues.
Carmona was arrested Thursday outside the U.S. consulate. Police said his real name is Roberto Hernandez Heredia and that he is 31, three years older than he had claimed.
Carmona was playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic.
