Andrei Makoveev wins biathlon World Cup event

NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic (AP) — Russia’s Andrei Makoveev shot flawlessly Thursday to earn his first biathlon World Cup victory.

Makoveev completed the 20-kilometer race in 47 minutes, 19.0 seconds. Overall World Cup leader Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway, who missed two targets, finished second, 59.7 seconds behind. Bjoern Ferry of Sweden missed once to place in third, 1:14.8 behind.

Svendsen leads the overall standings with 382 points from 10 events. Martin Fourcade of France is second with 348 points and Tarjei Boe of Norway is third with 336.

The women’s sprint race is Friday.
