SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem-area grocers are happy a new 7,000-square-foot recycling center is coming to replace the bottle collection operations they say take up space and money in their stores.
The Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative is tentatively scheduled to open the center in Salem in March. Other centers will open in Wood Village and Oregon City, the Salem Statesman Journal reports (http://stjr.nl/yMHUCi ).
The Salem center, which will be called BottleDrop, is the state’s largest.
Winco Food spokesman Michael Read says the company spent $50,000 collecting bottles per store and called the cost “extraordinary.”
