SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Confusion reigns in South Korea as to whether a promised high-speed rail link that helped Pyeongchang win the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics has been scrapped by the government or whether it was ever planned at all.
The city was awarded the games in July 2011 after its bid team reiterated that travel time between the venues and the country’s main airport at Incheon 155 miles away would be reduced to 68 minutes.
On Wednesday, domestic media reported that the government had scrapped the project due to concerns over cost and demand.
The country’s Transport Ministry subsequently issued a statement claiming that the high-speed link had never been considered.
In a news release, organizers of the 2018 games said the media’s “inaccurate reporting” caused the confusion.
