MONTREAL (AP) — The World Anti-Doping Agency has approved a new laboratory in Kazakhstan to test athletes’ samples for performance enhancing drugs.
The lab in Almaty is the 35th accredited by WADA and sixth in Asia. A seventh, in Malaysia, was suspended by WADA last July for not complying with international standards.
WADA president John Fahey says the Almaty lab will help fulfill the anti-doping requirements of a region not previously served.
WADA says three more labs — in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Doha, Qatar; and Mexico City — are still involved in an accreditation process that started two years ago.
