BOSTON (AP) — The past three years have been filled with health problems for Boston Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie.
A wrist injury hampered him in 2008 and 2009 and mononucleosis put him on the disabled list for the first 94 games last year. But now he’s healthy enough to play every day and manager Terry Francona thinks he could handle that role. There just isn’t an opening in Boston’s loaded lineup.
Lowrie said Thursday before the Boston baseball writers annual dinner that the main thing for him is being healthy again. He said he’ll go to spring training and see what happens as far as his role.
Francona sees the 26-year-old Lowrie as a valuable backup who can play all four infield positions. But the manager said Marco Scutaro remains his starting shortstop.
