PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon state Rep. Jefferson Smith of Portland has proposed playing classical music to reduce crime at troubled MAX light rail stops.

He introduced a bill that would require TriMet to identify high-crime stations and play opera and full orchestra pieces thought to have a calming effect.

A KATU reporter tested the idea Tuesday night by playing a Handel selection on her phone for passengers at the Lloyd Center MAX stop. Many riders said they liked the music but others thought it could be irritating.
