Portland courthouse flap: what’s on the TV?

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Picking the channel featured on the big-screen TV in the cafeteria of Portland’s downtown federal courthouse is no easy task.

Last fall, the TV was set to the Fox News cable network. Some diners complained that fare leaned too far to the right.

Betsy Pratt heads the League of Women Voters of Portland. She says a member of her group took the issue to the U.S. General Services Administration, which manages government buildings.

GSA spokesman Ross Buffington tells the Oregonian that just before the November election, GSA officials switched the satellite feed to CNN. But he notes, “A number of people missed having Fox News.”

Then, to save money, GSA officials decided to replace the satellite box with an antenna, which will bring in only local channels.

That has sparked more grumbling. Courthouse security workers say it’s important to have access to a 24/7 news network.
