DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Australia will host the 2015 Asian Cup after having its bid approved Wednesday.
The Asian Football Confederation voted in favor of Australia, the only country to submit a bid, at a meeting in Doha ahead of the Asian Cup, which runs from Friday until Jan. 29 in Doha, Qatar.
AFC president Mohammed Bin Hammam said the committee “considered all the achievements made in Australia toward the development of football and to encourage the next step in developing the game” in choosing the country to host Asia’s top soccer tournament.
The decision comes just weeks after Australia lost out to Qatar in a bid to host the 2022 World Cup.
