REDMOND, Wash. (AP) — Authorities in the Seattle suburb of Redmond say five people — four of them children — have been killed in an apartment fire early Saturday.

Police spokesman Officer Matt Peringer says the four children were all under the age of 10. He says a 32-year-old man died and a woman was taken to a hospital. Fire Battalion Chief Ed Carolan says she is reported in stable condition.

The relationship between the victims is not immediately known, nor is the cause of the fire. No other injuries have been reported, but residents of 12 apartments were evacuated and taken to temporary housing.

Carolan says the fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. in a ground floor unit at the Sammamish Ridge Apartments and quickly involved the two units above it. All three units were heavily damaged and the apartments next to them have smoke damage.
