Southeast Missouri turns back Morehead State 67-51

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Marland Smith scored 14 points and Southeast Missouri started the game with a 15-0 run in a 67-51 victory over Morehead State in an Ohio Valley Conference opener Wednesday night.

Nick Niemczyk and Corey Wilford scored 13 points apiece for the Redhawks (6-7), who won their second in a row. Leon Powell added 11, and Tyler Stone had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Ten players scored for the Eagles (6-8), but no one cracked double figures. Kahlil Owens and Terrance Hill had nine each for Morehead State, which had won two straight.

Southeast Missouri led 33-19 at halftime. The Eagles got no closer than 12 points in the second half, when the gap peaked at 22.

The Redhawks enjoyed a big shooting advantage, hitting 24 of 47 (51 percent) to 19 of 47 (40 percent) for the Eagles. Southeast Missouri also connected on 9 of 19 3-pointers.
