BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — Police have arrested Occupy Bellingham protesters who defied an eviction notice.
The Bellingham Herald reports that (http://bit.ly/vbr0CF) police officers in riot gear moved in to Maritime Heritage Park on Wednesday morning — day after the city had warned the encampment that it was being evicted.
The newspaper reports several arrests, though the final number is unclear. About 40 people were at the encampment on Wednesday.
Protesters have camped at the park since late October, pitching tents and signs to protest against wealth inequality.
But Mayor Dan Pike says businesses and resident complains about the damage to the park has prompted him to action, even if he agrees with some of the demands from the protesters.
