Clark County — Local agencies that battle homelessness won $909,970 in grants that were announced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday.
It was part of $38.6 million in renewed federal funding to 208 programs that serve the homeless in Washington state.
“The grants we’re awarding today will literally keep the doors of our shelters open and will help those on the front lines of ending homelessness do what they do best,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan in a statement.
Columbia River Mental Health Services got $123,064; Community Services Northwest got $91,700; The Council for the Homeless got $72,697; the Vancouver Housing Authority got $135,696; Second Step Housing got $281,992; and Share Inc. got $204,821 for various housing programs and related support services.
Last week, HUD announced that its “point in time” estimate of the number of homeless people in America was approximately 636,000 on a single night in January 2011. That’s a 2.1 percent decline from the year before.
