Letter: Vancouver squanders opportunity

The Columbian
Published: December 6, 2011, 4:00pm

I was raised and graduated from school on the Yakama Indian Reservation.

The Vancouver City Council and Clark County Commissioners had the opportunity to bring Vancouver out of merely being the “bedroom community” of Portland. That opportunity was to bring the Yakima Bears baseball team to Vancouver. In these days of needed jobs and needed revenue, the gutless council rejected the proposal to enhance this city.

Yet these councilors, and councilor-elect Bill Turlay, hold the idea of the tax issue for future review. By rejecting pro baseball, Vancouver loses both jobs and the opportunity to become a city that has an identity other than “the other Vancouver.”
