TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A 23-year Tacoma police veteran has been charged with drunken driving after a two-car crash last week.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that 52-year-old Sgt. David W. Alred was charged Dec. 16 and will be arraigned next month in Pierce County Superior Court.

Police spokesman Mark Fulghum says that Alred has been put on administrative leave and will be so until an internal investigation is completed.

Charging document says that Alred drove into the rear of a car stopped at a red light after speeding down a Tacoma street. Documents say that an officer responding to the crash noticed that Alred’s eyes were watery and that he stumbled out of his car.

A breathalyzer test estimated his blood alcohol level at .227. The legal limit is .08.
