Prep roundup: Defense carries Ridgefield boys to victory

Haley Holboke, Mountain View girls basketball, scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter plus made four clutch free-throws in the Thunder’s 50-44 win over Mountain View of Bend, Ore.

Five Union wrestlers captured individual championships at the Shelton Holiday Tournament as the Titans claimed the team title over W.F. West. Trevor Smith (103), Tyler Davis (135), Matt Rice (152), Bryson Page (215) and Max Proudfit (285) won titles.

Juan Valencia, Ridgefield wrestling, won the 189-pound division at the Shelton Holiday Tournaent.

Britni Atwell, Heritage gymnastics, won the vault (9.5), beam (9.15) and floor exercise (9.4) and all-around (34.45) as Heritage beat Fort Vancouver.

The Ridgefield boys basketball team got defensive in the second half and walked out of the Castle Rock gym with a 65-50 Trico League victory Saturday night.

The Spudders, who gave up 31 points in the first half, held the Rockets to 19 in the second half in a 65-50 victory.

Sam Landerholm led Ridgefield with 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Max Ballentyne added 12 points, and Dylan Young scored 11.

“Much of our problem in the first half was second shots,” Ridgefield coach Glenn Ford said. “We controlled the boards in the second half.”

Kalama 63, La Center 50 — Devon Richard scored 15 points to lead Kalama over the Wildcats.

Austin Myers led La Center with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Mick Jarvie added 15 points. Cole Neuberger just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Ilwaco 70, Stevenson 57 — Ryan Kukula and Bobby Byrd combined to score 40 points, leading Ilwaco to victory. Tanner Lloyd led Stevenson with 13 points.

Girls basketball

La Center 60, at Kalama 24 — Kiley Monson had a triple-double to lead La Center to its second Trico League win.

Monson had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals for the Wildcats (4-3, 2-0), who jumped out to a 30-12 halftime lead.

Katrina Chamberlain had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Marissa Moore added 11 points for La Center.

Ilwaco 60, Stevenson 39 — Kenzi Wirkkala scored 24 points, and Alexa Wirkkala had 16 as Ilwaco remained undefeated in Trico League play.

Kenzi Wirkkala scored eight points and was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the third quarter as Ilwaco pulled away from a one-point halftime lead to lead 46-28 after three quarters.

Courtney Rutherford was the only Stevenson player in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Castle Rock 51, Ridgefield 39 — Penny Hughes scored 10 points to lead the Spudders, who were outscored 32-14 in the second half.
