WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has rejected an attempt to reduce Rep. Charles Rangel’s punishment for financial and fundraising misconduct.
The New York Democrat now faces a vote on a resolution to censure him. If it passes, Rangel must appear at the front of the chamber while Speaker Nancy Pelosi reads the resolution.
Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina proposed that Rangel receive a lesser reprimand that would not require the 20-term veteran to appear personally to receive his punishment.
The reprimand was rejected on a 267-146 vote.
