Pulmonologist Dr. Bhanu Patibandla, left, and thoracic surgeon Dr. Svetlana Kotova stand for a portrait with an Ion Endoluminal System device at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver. The device allows Patibandla to locate and biopsy lung masses that are less then a centimeter in size, a tenth of what could traditionally be located and biopsied before. Using the device, Patibandla and Kotova developed a dual procedure where they perform a lung biopsy and remove the mass in a single operation, providing a diagnosis and treatment with one procedure instead of two.
