Vern Sapp, 90, of Camas, is a World War II veteran. As a member of the U.S. Amphibious Force, he was a cook on one of the ships that transported troops and equipment to Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Sapp, a Kentucky native, was a sheet metal worker for 20 years at the paper mill in Camas before he retired.

The gravestone of Alexander Stuber, who lived from 1866 to 1908, was the only one that was broken as a result of vandalism at the Camas Cemetery nearly two weeks ago. In the span of seven days, donations from local individuals and businesses helped raise the $1,000 needed to replace the monument.
