About 15 years before this photo was taken of the old Clark County Courthouse, it was invaded by three members of the Columbia Klan No. 1 supposedly on a mission of mercy. Although the men wanted to fulfill a crippled boy’s request for leg braces, their assault was at odds with this intent and alarmed the courthouse staff, including a deputy sheriff. While the Klan had been operating in Oregon for several months, this was the first public appearance of uniformed Ku Klux Klansmen in the county.
