Clark County History: Alcoa and FDR

President Franklin D. Roosevelt quietly visited West Coast facilities contributing to the war effort in late 1942. He's shown in the convertible driving through the plant on the passenger's side with his arm resting on the door. He wanted to check on the status of manufacturing and aluminum critical to the war effort. In the left foreground is the crane used to lift huge vats. In the center is the lip of one of the used to hold molten aluminum. The men facing the crowd are likely Secret Service men protecting the president.

Just before Christmas 1939, Alcoa announced the construction of an aluminum plant, the first in the West, in the lowlands near the Port of Vancouver on the Columbia River. Up the river two years earlier, Bonneville Dam turbines began cranking out cheap hydropower. The matching of the two wasn’t happenstance.… Read story
