Gen. Brice Disque (1879-1960) began his career in the Philippines and rose through the enlisted ranks to captain before leaving the Army. He arrived in Portland in the fall of 1917 to lead the Spruce Production Division, part of the Army Signal Corps. In just 45 days, he built the Spruce Cut-up Plant (between Pearson Air Park and Fort Vancouver) to mill spruce for World War I airplanes.
