For many years, the entrance to Esther Short Park was bracketed by two heavy gristmill stones telling a story of Clark County's and the nation's agrarian past. Legend says these stones ground flour for the Hudson Bay Company. In 1870, the U.S. boasted 22,573 gristmills; 160 were in Washington Territory. Since the early 1800s, millstones were usually imported from France. Today, Clark County has one gristmill, the Cedar Creek Grist Mill, which is a working museum and national landmark.
