This 1922 image of the Sells-Floto Circus shows an elephant pulling a canvas-covered cage wagon into position. An octagon cage wagon is on the right. The circus, formed in the early 1900s, toured the United States as the second-largest traveling circus until 1921. That September, it was robbed of $30,000 in Vancouver by three bandits. After the heist, the American Circus Corporation absorbed Sells-Floto Circus.

On Sept. 16, 1921, three trains brought the Sells-Floto Circus to Vancouver after weeks of advertising. Circus workers pitched tents on a three-block area in the Hough neighborhood starting at Harney and 19th streets. Elephants pulled up tent poles and men pulled ropes, lifting fluttering canvas for the performances. Read story
