During the Mexican War, the first commander of the Vancouver Barracks, John S. Hatheway, was among the 2,000 men in the United States military attacking and taking the Castle of Chapultepec, a strategic defense of Mexico City, in 1847. The castle was a former residence converted into a military academy. The American troops bombarded the castle with cannons and were situated so that Mexican Gen. Santa Anna could not send his army in without a significant loss.
