Clark County repairing bridges along Chelatchie railroad

Clark County Public Works is addressing damaged, decaying or missing timber elements — piles, posts, stringers, braces and ties — on bridges along the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad.

Additional repairs include replacing deficient abutment walls, sloughing approach ballast, and missing or loose bolts and other connection hardware. Several of the bridges are closed to rail traffic due to their condition.

As the owner of the 33-mile-long short-line railroad, the county is required to maintain the infrastructure to meet regulatory requirements.

During the week of Sept. 30, contractors will work on the bridge in the Gordy Jolma Family Natural Area. Access to the trail may be blocked while work is happening or the trail may be closed. Visitors will be allowed to pass through the area, though they will see slight delays.

Construction is scheduled to be complete by mid-December, but is dependent on weather conditions.
