Weather Eye: September likely to end up with below-average rainfall

Wednesday’s rainfall varied from a third of an inch to over half an inch near our foothills — a decent rain by any standards, and helpful to the thirsty vegetation.

Another weak weather system moved over us during the nighttime hours, and by early Friday morning, less than a tenth of an inch was added to the rain gauge here in Vancouver.

The total as of Friday was getting close to three-quarters of an inch officially. Many of you have over an inch of rain in your record books.

Regardless, it looks like September will end up with below-average rainfall. October arrives Tuesday, which will be a rainless day to start the month off.

You’ll remember we chatted about the weather outlook for October, and our rain totals were predicted to be close to average, but we are only miles away from having a much wetter-than-normal October. We’ll see how that develops.

We will have a fair weekend, with mild temperatures today but cooler weather on Sunday. Highs will remain below 70 degrees, as it looks right now.

I don’t see any increased chance of rain until later next week at the earliest.

Some forecast models keep us warm and dry all next week. I keep in the back of my mind that October weather can trick us weather forecasters. It’s a trick-or-treat month weatherwise, as I always say.

After all, October is still early in the fall season, and it takes a while to get into the normal autumn rainy-season routine.

I can tell you the deciduous tree colors are beginning to blaze in some locations around the county. Mid-October would be an ideal time to take a nice drive into our foothills.

The pumpkins are basking in the sunlight, waiting for the hordes of both young and older people to claim their precious bounty. We’ll keep the old weather eye out and let you know how the weekend weather is shaping up each week for fun treks into the fields.

Enjoy the pleasant fall weekend, and we’ll sit down and chat next Tuesday.
