VANCOUVER – Assistance League Southwest Washington member volunteers went shopping for back-to-school clothing with 99 local youths living in out-of-home care through the Department of Youth and Family Services. The chapter’s annual back-to-school shopping spree is in partnership with Fred Meyer and was held Aug. 23-25 at the Grand Central store. Assistance League spent $19,481 this year.
The members said that it is so special to see these children picking out their brand-new clothing. Some said they were getting new clothes for the first time in their lives.
In addition to clothing, the children had the opportunity to buy shoes. Member seamstresses of Assistance League sewed cloth shopping bags for the children and as gifts for the Fred Meyer clerks assisting them that day. Fred Meyer put out fresh fruit for all to enjoy and offered special goody bags for the children.
